As you gently push your way past other settling airline passengers, eager to get that last available window seat so you are not destined for the discomfort of middle-seat-land, you take your seat just in time to hear that safety schpeel that we all love so much! "In the event of a water landing, your seat can be used as a flotation device..." Then we hear the Captain chime in as we taxi to the runway "kksshh - this is the Captain speaking, aahhh we are going to be cruising at 37,000 feet with an estimated flight time of 3 hours and 35 minutes. So, ahhh, sit back and enjoy the flight, welcome aboard." Now, with all of these airline pilots sounding alike, I am starting to thing that they train themselves to speak in that very distinct, Bill Clinton-like crackly voice! Maybe its just me.
This particular day is ripe with stormy weather. Thunderstorms for 100 miles. As you leave the ground, everything seems cool. You even marvel at the speed of which the water beads blast past your itty-bitty window ( and half of a window which you share with the person in front of you). About 5 minutes into your flight, your captain hits the mic again to let you all know that the seatbelt sign is going to remain on, as you are about to hit some turbulence. The next thing you know, everything shakes, flight attendants grab the nearest seat, you are getting jostled around, head bouncing off of the window, smacking funny-bones with that jubilant late arrival lost in middle-seat-land next to you! Its rough, and it sucks! You strain your neck to see if the wing has fallen off - surely this plane cant take much more! And just as you start to prepare to be using your seat as a flotation device, its over. Calm, peaceful, balance restored. You take a breath and then lose it again as you get a chance to see what few people do; the always serene life above the storm. So far up in the air, you can see the storm clouds below you, so heavy with rain that they cant go any higher. The seatbelt sign turns off with that pleasant "bing" sound, and you hear "you are free to move about the cabin." Ultimately, I think that we each have a choice, everyday, which environment we are going to fly in. Situations sometimes rain on our otherwise delightful day. And if your life is anything like mine, when it rains, it pours for sure! Unfortunately, we cant control when it rains, or how much it dumps into our day, but we can control how we deal with it. I watched a great episode of MythBusters one day, and the experiment was whether it was the one who walked through rain, or the one who ran through rain, that got the most wet. The interesting thing is that it was the one who ran to get out of the rain that collected more water, than the one who calmly walked. The lesson I have for you today is that you will have days that produce unexpected thunderstorms and pouring rain. Be the person with a great attitude, knowing that it is the "testing of your faith that produces patience" James 1:3. As you face each challenge with appreciation for the lesson that you are learning, your attitude is producing a better altitude that is allowing you quickly rise above the storm, and experience a peaceful calm that few get to know. You will find that you will collect only a fraction of the water/damage/heartache than those around you who choose to be angry or bitter as they remain in the uncomfortable funk that you just left behind. Have you ever attended a conference or an event where you left feeling so pumped up and energized about your business only to find that a week later you were just as unmotivated as you were before you left? We all have! Your Calling Erin Glass - Friday, July 16, 2010
I think the age old question is "What am I supposed to do with my life?" Well, some people just know immediately while others have to go through a journey to discover their purpose. We each have a calling and sometimes you just need to listen to those around you to discover what it is.
I have helped dozens of people launch their business and I've heard so many times the question, "What is it I am good at?". I usually say just listen and your clients, friends, family, colleagues will tell you. Our business direction changed several times based on what our clients were telling us that they found most beneficial. Secondly, by communicating what it is that you do and having a clear delivery, people will respond positively or negatively. I never once considered myself a "writer" yet I've been told numerous times that my blogs or topics I've written on have been helpful. Perhaps my calling is to share my experiences with others so that they too can learn and move forward. A lot of people define success by what car you drive or by the size of home you live in and while that's all great it isn't necessarily the best measure of true success. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being prosperous and it is our God given right to do so. I think the area where things get fuzzy is that having money makes you happy. I have friends whose families say that if you aren't making a certain income or living a particular standard of life, that you are not successful and I would beg to differ. I also have friends who, on paper, have it all and are the most miserable. If you are content in what you do, find passion in your endeavors and seek to give before you receive, you are prosperous. Do what you love and the money will follow. Money alone does not buy happiness and I think if you ever doubt that, look to Hollywood. Many celebrities have all the finances in the world but can't seem to fill that void. That "void" will never be filled by money or material things alone. True joy comes from a heart of giving and following your calling. One last thing I'd like to share. Sometimes following your "calling" can be scary but the rewards can far outweigh the risks. Having Faith Erin Glass - Thursday, July 15, 2010
One of the most challenging things to maintain during anytype of new venture is Faith. Faith is the belief in something without proof. It's almost counterintuitive for the business professional because we live and die by numbers, right? We need proof that something is working or else we will adjust our approach.
There are somethings that you can't analyze or run a report on and for those you need Faith. Faith is a powerful tool that many people leave untapped. See yourself accomplishing the goals you have set forth and REALLY truly believe in yourself. If you don't, who else will. Confidence comes from within and knowing that you have the right to be a success. Think about all of the great success stories out there. Do you think they were without struggle or opposition? No. They too went through valleys and climbed mountains. The difference between those who succeed (even after failures) and those who fail and just give up is FAITH. They believe enough in themselves to get up, dust themelves off, and keep going. Just when you think the road couldn't get bumpier, it just may. There are lessons uncovered down the bumpy roads and you will grow, become wise, and ultimately be better prepared for larger success because of those bumps. You know the saying, "Nothing good comes easy"? There is so much truth behind that statement. So, treat the challenges as lessons that will ultimately make you a better person and keep faith that you will succeed and remember, YOU are not alone. The Importance of Fresh Content Erin Glass - Sunday, July 11, 2010
The Importance of Fresh Content
I’m sure you’ve all seen those websites that look like they haven’t been updated in years and worse they event tell you that they haven’t been updated in years by leaving copyright 2002 at the bottom of their website or articles dated 2007.
What do you immediately think when you see that; that they’re not concerned about providing their customers up-to-date information or that they’re not very progressive or even perhaps they’re out of business? We could speculate all day long but they might actually be a very successful and capable company.
I’m not telling you this as the main point of fresh content but rather to show you another reason why it’s good to update your site on a regular basis.
One of the best benefits of fresh content is that the search engines love it! To put in simply, the more times you update your website, the more frequently your site will get “crawled” by the search engines.
They are looking for new content and if they don’t find any, then they may not come back to visit your site for a longer period of time. If they are constantly identifying new content, then the spiders will come back to “crawl” your site more frequently.
The more frequently these search engines index your site, the higher in rankings your site will become.
If you are saying to yourself, I don’t have time to write fresh content, I would say yes you do. If you have a blog on your website, update it with a quote or a quick tip. It doesn’t have to be a novel.
Maintaining your search engine rankings depends on several variables but having fresh content is one. I hope you have found this interesting and informative!
To your continued success,
Erin Glass
