The Importance of Fresh Content

I’m sure you’ve all seen those websites that look like they haven’t been updated in years and worse they event tell you that they haven’t been updated in years by leaving copyright 2002 at the bottom of their website or articles dated 2007.

What do you immediately think when you see that; that they’re not concerned about providing their customers up-to-date information or that they’re not very progressive or even perhaps they’re out of business?  We could speculate all day long but they might actually be a very successful and capable company.

I’m not telling you this as the main point of fresh content but rather to show you another reason why it’s good to update your site on a regular basis.

One of the best benefits of fresh content is that the search engines love it!  To put in simply, the more times you update your website, the more frequently your site will get “crawled” by the search engines.

They are looking for new content and if they don’t find any, then they may not come back to visit your site for a longer period of time. If they are constantly identifying new content, then the spiders will come back to “crawl” your site more frequently.

The more frequently these search engines index your site, the higher in rankings your site will become.

If you are saying to yourself, I don’t have time to write fresh content, I would say yes you do.   If you have a blog on your website, update it with a quote or a quick tip.  It doesn’t have to be a novel.

Maintaining your search engine rankings depends on several variables but having fresh content is one.  I hope you have found this interesting and informative!

My goal for 2010

Erin Glass - Saturday, January 02, 2010
I wanted to start a blog that I update daily for an entire year.  I'm starting January 2, 2010 and made my first post of the New Year on Facebook on January 1, 2010.

Moving forward I will capture my daily thoughts, aspirations, advice here and share it with all who want to follow.

Many may not know but 1 year ago this month my husband and I both lost our corporate jobs within 48 hours of each other.  It's safe to say we were in shock, but we didn't waste much time before we decided that we were going to go into business for ourselves together.

We've learned a lot over that last year and I wanted to share our past experiences as well as our future with others who may be going through similar situations.

One of the very first things you should do when starting a business that most people don't think about is of course securing the name of your business. You need to be aware if you are going to have an online presence (and I suggest you do), whether or not the name you choose has a corresponding domain name available. Available is the key word.  It's more difficult than you might think to secure a .com domain name.

Tip:  Write down several names that you like and visit godaddy.com to search for available domains.  If unavailable, godaddy will offer recommendations.  Some people might say, well why don't I just buy the .net or .biz version.  That's fine, but remember the most common domains are .coms and if you're marketing your business under a .net or .biz you may be loosing a lot of traffic to the .com version inadvertently marketing for your competition.

You should also purchase common misspellings as well. Example:  Victoria's Secret owns victoriasecret.com and victoriassecret.com  because it's easy to leave off the extra "s".   When you find one you like, BUY it, even if you aren't sure you're going to use it.  It's usually less than $10 per domain name for a year so it's not a lot of money to "insure" that the domain is available later if you change your mind.  I would also buy the .com, .net, .org, etc if you want to ensure no one else is using the same name as you are online.

You'll realize that when you go to register your business that many organization do ask if you have a website or a web address.  I hope you find this tip helpful if you are considering starting a business or if you just want to take your "brick and mortar" online.

To your success,

Erin Glass
